Electric Vehicle Charging Firm Nuvve Embraces Bitcoin, Allocates 30% of Cash Reserves

In a bold move that signals growing corporate interest in cryptocurrencies, Nuvve, a Nasdaq-listed clean energy electric vehicle charging technology company, has announced plans to allocate up to 30% of its excess cash reserves to purchase Bitcoin (BTC). The company, which specializes in electric vehicle charging solutions, revealed this strategy as part of a broader initiative to diversify its holdings and offer Bitcoin as a payment option for customers and suppliers.

Gregory Poilasne, founder and CEO of Nuvve, explained that accepting Bitcoin will not only expand payment choices but also reduce transaction friction associated with traditional digital payment methods. This move aligns Nuvve with a growing trend of publicly traded companies turning to cryptocurrency to enhance financial stability and share value, particularly as Bitcoin has seen a 150% surge over the past year.

The announcement had an immediate, albeit modest, impact on Nuvve’s stock performance. Shares of Nuvve (NVVE) experienced a brief uptick, closing at $2.81 with a 1.81% gain on January 28, 2025. In after-hours trading, the stock continued its upward trajectory, climbing an additional 1.42% to $2.85. However, it’s worth noting that the company’s stock remains in a long-term decline, having lost 10% of its value so far this month.

Nuvve’s financial position adds context to this decision. The company reported $1.92 million in revenue for the third quarter of 2024, marking a 29.3% decline from the previous quarter. According to its latest financial filings, Nuvve holds $325,425 in cash. If 30% of this amount were allocated to Bitcoin at its current price of $101,836, it would equate to just under one BTC.

This move by Nuvve is part of a larger trend of corporate Bitcoin adoption. Bitcoin Treasuries data shows that 62 publicly traded companies collectively hold 618,615 BTC, valued at over $62.6 billion.

MicroStrategy leads this group with 471,107 BTC, while Tesla, a major player in the electric vehicle industry, holds 9,720 BTC.

Elon Musk’s aerospace company held 9,297 Bitcoins as of December 19, 2024, with an estimated value of $930 million. This makes SpaceX the seventh-largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally.

As a leading Bitcoin mining company, Marathon Digital not only produces Bitcoin but also incorporates it into its treasury strategy. The company’s commitment to holding Bitcoin aligns with its belief in the cryptocurrency’s long-term potential.

Another major player in the Bitcoin mining industry, Hut 8 Mining Corp has adopted a “HODL” strategy, holding a significant portion of its mined Bitcoin on its balance sheet. This approach reflects the company’s confidence in Bitcoin’s future as a valuable asset.

Nuvve’s decision to invest in Bitcoin and accept it as a form of payment reflects the growing intersection of traditional industries with cryptocurrency. As more companies explore digital assets as part of their financial strategies, it could signal a shift in how businesses approach treasury management and customer transactions in the evolving digital economy.
